September 2025 --- Yolanda Galindo
Nickname: Corre Caminos or the Roadrunner (reason: she’s always out and about helping someone!)
“The name Yolanda has origins in both medieval French and Latin. It is derived from the name Yolande, which is linked to the Latin word “viola,” meaning “violet” or “violet flower”. This name is often associated with strength and resilience, and it has been used in various cultures particularly in Spanish and English speaking communities.”
Congratulations Senior of the Month
Use your God-given talents, blessings, and abilities to make someone else’s life better.
Yolanda Galindo was born in La Union, New Mexico, on August 12, 1953. Her parents, Francisco and Adela Galindo were from La Union where they raised their family of eleven. When Yolanda was young, she loved singing and said she sounded like Loretta Lynn although that is debatable. She still sings and hums. She also spent a lot of time reading and helping the family pick cotton and onions. She and her siblings watched old movies, the Steve Crosno show, and wrestling. She loved play fighting with her brothers and sisters and sometimes her neighbors who we will not mention. “Era caraja” (by the way, those neighbors are now her good friends). As an adult, her hobbies are coloring, painting, and playing word search.
She enjoys the peacefulness and tranquility of living in La Union. Another place she has lived is Las Cruces for approximately 16 years, and later she returned to La Union to help care for our mom. Yolanda loves to bake cookies, cakes, and breads which she then shares with family.
When she was in high school, she began her career at White Sands Missile Range as a student aide and then was hired permanently as a secretary. She then advanced in her career and held a number of positions. All in all, she worked at WSMR for 40 years. There is no doubt that Yolanda enjoyed working.
According to others, Yolanda enjoys helping anyone in need. Even though she admits that her attitude isn't always the best, she is a friendly person. She laughs as she says she's easygoing, and states, "Don't ask Marina Medina though, because she will tell you the truth."
During the holidays Yolanda loves to cook for the family and get together and have a good meal. She also enjoys playing with her little nieces and nephews. Yolanda’s favorite holidays are Thanksgiving and Christmas because they are days for togetherness with family and friends and days for being especially thankful even though we should give thanks to our lord for our blessings every day.
When asked about the small things in life that she has come to appreciate more as she ages, she responded without hesitation, "the ability to get up independently in the mornings." She is grateful that she is well. Yolanda values her family, friends, and good health above all else.
On another note, she is also one of those rare people who enjoys volunteering and giving back. She volunteers for La Union Helping Hands, Townsite of La Union, picking up her nieces, nephews from school, and lending a helping hand when people are sick. As long as she is able, she will continue to volunteer.
If she were to give a young person life advice, she would tell them to always try their best and to treat others with kindness and respect. Use your God-given talents, blessings, and abilities to make someone else’s life better. (You see, Yolanda lives her life by this advice.) And always take responsibility for your actions and learn from your mistakes.
Finally, Yolanda would like to say, always be honest with yourself and stay true to who you are. Enjoy life!
SPECIAL NOTE: Yolanda was diagnosed with breast cancer years ago and battled it with chemo and radiation therapy. She is grateful for the love and support she received from God and her family during that challenging time. This difficult time made her realize how important family really is.
Congratulations Yolanda, you are very deserving of this recognition.
